Ms Catherine Loh
I graduated from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2008 with a double major in Economics and Finance. While at UNSW, I conducted lessons for primary and secondary students in South West Sydney. Having discovered an aptitude for working with children and having felt called to the teaching profession, I set up a home-based centre in 2009, providing after- school help for students.
In 2011, I pursued a Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) and Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at International House, Sydney. The two courses focused on differentiated instruction for English Language Learners and gave me the opportunity to engage with groups of learners from diverse educational backgrounds and proficiencies. Upon completion of CELTA, I worked as a part time language teacher, coaching the English language to international students of elementary and upper intermediate levels.
In 2012, I moved to Singapore and joined a premium enrichment centre as an English teacher. During my 10 years there, I taught students from Primary 2 to Primary 6 and crafted curriculum. As a teacher, I am attracted to the prospect of utilising and expanding my knowledge and skills in delivering lessons that guide students to successful learning outcomes.
In 2011, I graduated from Singapore Management University (SMU) with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management, double majoring in Finance and Corporate Communications.
For six years, I worked in a corporate setting while volunteering as a Sunday school teacher and with ReadAble, a reading program for underprivileged children. It was during my time at ReadAble that I discovered my passion for teaching and helping children reach their full potential in both academic and personal growth.
Since then, I have taught at a premium enrichment center, working with primary school students from Primary One to Primary Six. Having seen many batches of students graduate, I have gained confidence in what it takes to be a successful learner in Singapore's education system.
My teaching approach incorporates real-life applications by integrating current societal issues, fostering empathy, resourcefulness, and resilience in my students to prepare them for an ever-changing world.
During my time at SMU, I served as the President of the Students' Association in 2009. This experience allowed me to cultivate valuable communication and leadership skills, which I hope to impart to my students in my English lessons. My goal is for my students to view English not only as a subject but as a crucial medium of communication and a tool for expressing their creativity and individuality.
